Seo Eunsu was naturally a timid and quiet person. She had always been that way, and over the course of her tumultuous life, her timidity had become firmly ingrained. As a result, the motto of her life now was simply: “Safety first.”

Thus, that late night, when her family began interrogating her about her meeting with Jinhyuk, she could feel the stress piling up immediately.

“Are you really marrying Woo Jinhyuk?”

She had entered her room without encountering anyone after coming home, so how had her family already found out about it?

Her younger sister, Jina, was particularly excited, as if the mere fact that she had met Jinhyuk was an extraordinary event.

“How could you meet him, unnie? Do you have any shame? He’s completely out of your league!”

“I don’t think that’s any of your business.”

Eunsu replied in a tired voice, but Jina didn’t seem to hear her.

“You’re lying, right? You just happened to have a meal with him because he’s your college senior, and the rumours got blown out of proportion, right?”

Eunsu sighed deeply and looked at Jina.

“It’s none of your business, so can you leave now? I’m tired.”

“What could you possibly be tired from? You’re unemployed, lounging around all day! Wait, don’t tell me—what did you do with Jinhyuk? Did you throw yourself at him with that scrawny body of yours? No way, right?”

Jina mocked her, giving her a disdainful once-over. Eunsu’s tone became firmer.

“Seo Jina, I said stop and get out.”

Finally, Jina pretended to back off slightly.

“Honestly, they say the quiet ones are the first to climb onto the stove. Anyway, Dad’s waiting for you in the study. Go see him.”

Having said everything she wanted, Jina finally revealed the real reason for her intrusion and left.

Eunsu let out a deep sigh and left her room. The study was one of her least favourite places in the house. In fact, she didn’t like most places in this house, but the study was the worst—gloomy and suffocating, just like Chairman Seo himself.

After knocking, she entered, and Chairman Seo motioned toward the sofa in front of his desk with his chin.

“Sit down.”

“Yes.”

Before Eunsu could even sit, Chairman Seo spoke in a hurried tone.

“I heard you met Woo Jinhyuk today.”

“Yes.”

“And he proposed marriage?”

As Eunsu hesitated, recalling Jinhyuk’s departing figure, she answered,

“…Yes.”

“Not sure why, but that’s good news.”

Chairman Seo spoke in a tone filled with laughter, almost as if praising her. It was a tone she had never heard before in her 28 years of life. Not even when she had been accepted into a prestigious university had he been this delighted.

“Well, it seems their family is in chaos over this, but I doubt Jinhyuk brought up marriage without expecting that. Make sure to live well.”

“Yes.”

“If you need anything for the wedding preparations, let me know.”

“Yes, Father.”

Chairman Seo looked genuinely pleased. It made sense. After living his whole life being looked down upon as a nouveau riche, becoming in-laws with a family as distinguished as Jinhyuk’s must have felt like a dream come true.

“So, when’s the wedding?”

“I’m not sure yet.”

Eunsu answered, but inwardly, she added sarcastically:

*It’ll probably be called off soon anyway.*

“Let me know once things progress. Here, take this. Use this card for anything you need.”

Eunsu stood up and accepted the card he handed her. For a brief moment, she entertained the thought of running away overseas with the card, pretending she hadn’t heard anything about marriage. She then laughed at herself internally.

*He’d just cancel the card, and that’d be the end of it.*

“Thank you, Father.”

As she politely accepted the card, Chairman Seo spoke in a rather gentle voice.

“After years of struggling, it seems like your life is finally taking a turn for the better.”

“…….”

“You must be tired. Go get some rest.”

“Yes, good night.”

As she left the study, Seo’s fourth wife, Youngjoo, was waiting outside and asked,

“Is it true?”

“What do you mean?”

“That you’re marrying Professor Woo Jinhyuk.”

Without expression, Eunsu replied as if it were nothing.

“It’s exactly as you’ve heard.”

Youngjoo chuckled, giving Eunsu a once-over.

“They say even a beetle has its talents. Seems you’ve grabbed onto quite the rope.”

Eunsu didn’t respond and simply turned to go back to her room.

*Click.*

After closing the door and locking it, she finally let out a weary sigh.

“So tired…”

She mumbled as she sprawled onto her bed.
